All the Farrellys’ trademark grossness is here, but blended with bouncy good humour, giving the brothers their biggest commercial success to date.
Part of the movie was shot in the Farrellys’ native Rhode Island, but it’s mostly set against the candy-coloured backdrop of Miami Beach.
The ‘high school’, where nerdy Ted Stroehmann (Ben Stiller) doesn’t quite make it to the prom with Mary (Cameron Diaz), is Plantation City Hall, 400 Northwest 73rd Avenue at NW 5th Street, in Plantation, a few miles west of Fort Lauderdale.
But much of the film is shot around Miami, where Pat Healy (Matt Dillon) meets Sully (Jeffrey Tambor) at the Big Pink Restaurant, 157 Collins Avenue, south of South Beach’s Art Deco district.
Mary takes faker Pat Healy to an architecture exhibition at the Center for the Fine Arts, in what is now the HistoryMiami Museum, 101 West Flagler Street, downtown Miami.
Mary’s office, where Ted meets up with her thirteen years after his little accident, is on the downtown Miami waterfront at Brickell Park, overlooking the Brickell Key Causeway.
Ted’s Miami hotel, where he unwittingly provides Mary with nature’s own hair gel after ‘cleaning the pipes’, is the Cardozo Hotel, 1300 Ocean Drive at 14th Street. This art deco gem can also be seen in Frank Capra’s 1959 A Hole In The Head.
The waterside bar, where Healy reports back to Ted, though, can be found in Providence, Rhode Island. It’s The Hot Club, 575 South Water Street off Bridge Street.
