Broad, one-note dark farce, along the lines of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Trouble With Harry, with New York office workers Larry Wilson and Richard Parker (Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman) covering up the death of their boss, the titular Bernie, while enjoying the highlife in his beach house.
‘Hampton Island’ was actually filmed in North Carolina, not far from the East Coast filming centre of Wilmington. Most of the movie was shot on Bald Head Island, about 30 miles south of Wilmington at the mouth of the Cape Fear River.
The lighthouse, where Parker gets temporarily blinded, is the Old Baldy Light. Bernie’s ultramodern beach house was built specially for the movie (and dismantled after shooting) on the Fort Fisher Recreation Area, between Bald Head Island and Carolina Beach State Park, which is where the corpse of Bernie ends up ‘waterskiing’.
