Robert Altman’s bleakly atmospheric Western, trashed on release, has since gained classic status.
Sadly, you can't visit the frontier town of ‘Presbyterian Church’, which was built in its entirety – cabins, saloons, barbershop, whorehouse, church, general store and sawmill – in West Vancouver, British Columbia, and gorgeously photographed by Vilmos Zsigmond.
The town of ‘Bearpaw’, where the enterprising John McCabe (Warren Beatty) recruits his first three prostitutes, is Squamish, at the head of Howe Sound, midway between Vancouver and Whistler.
