Mozart's opera filmed Busby Berkeley-style as a stage production which opens up cinematically. The theatre in which it's performed is established as the Drottningholm Palace Theatre in the royal Drottningholm Palace Park just west of Stockholm.
The opera house is one of the few 18th century theatres in Europe still used as a theatre with its original stage machinery. Director Ingmar Bergman intended to make the film in the Baroque theatre but when this proved impractical, the interior – complete with wings, curtains, and wind machines – was recreated at Filmhuset, part of the Swedish Film Institute in Stockholm.
