Yimou Zhang’s ravishingly beautiful movie was shot in the old preserved Qiao Family Villa on the road between Taiyuan and Pingyao in Qiaojiabao near Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province, China.

The Qiao Family Villa, originally the Zaizhong Hall, is a courtyard house in Qi County, Jinzhong Prefecture, about 20 miles northeast of Pingyao.

The residential compound of financier Qiao Zhiyong, the most famous member of the Qiao family, construction began in 1756 during the Qing dynasty and the complex was completed sometime in the 18th century.

The estate, covering 9,000 square metres, has 313 rooms set within six large courtyards and 19 smaller courtyards. Considered to be one of the finest remaining examples of private residences in northern China, it's now preserved as a museum.

Taiyuan can be reached by Taiyuan Wusu International Airport, from Beijing or Shanghai.
