Brassed Off | 1996

Set in the fictitious town of ‘Grimley’ and using the famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band, this was shot in Doncaster, Birmingham and London.
The brass band championship was filmed at the Piece Hall, Blackledge in Halifax, West Yorkshire. The Hall, 315 rooms arranged in galleries around a vast, open-air courtyard, was opened in 1779 as a market for handloom weavers to sell woollen goods (the ‘pieces’). It’s Grade I listed and was reopened in 2017 after a multi-million pound restoration, with shops, bars and cafes and the courtyard – sorry, piazza – hosting music, theatre and sporting events.
The band finals were staged at the Royal Albert Hall, Knightsbridge, but the interior seen in the film as actually that of Birmingham Town Hall, Victoria Square, Birmingham.
This is a basic entry and due to be expanded.
