Michael Bay delivers a slam-bang Simpson-Bruckheimer actioner, filmed around Miami Beach, with mismatched cops Martin Lawrence and Will Smith tracking down a mega-stash of heroin lifted from the cop station.
The cop station is the Dade County Courthouse, 73 West Flagler Street on the corner with NW 1st Avenue, downtown Miami. When it was built in 1928, this handsome, terra-cotta faced structure with its pyramid peak was claimed to be – at 360 feet – the tallest building in the US south of Washington D.C. (Metrorail: Government Center Station). It’s also where over-zealous FBI agent Bob Balaban worked in Sydney Pollack’s 1981 Absence of Malice.
The druggy party, at which Julie Mott (Téa Leoni) dives into the pool after witnessing a double murder, is at the Biltmore Hotel, 1200 Anastasia Avenue at De Soto Boulevard, Coral Gables, southwest Miami. Built in 1926, and designed by the architects of the Waldorf-Astoria and Grand Central Station in New York, the hotel has had a chequered history, closing down and being resold several times. It’s now a national historic landmark and a luxury spa resort.
The stylish apartment of Det Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) is 2030 Park Avenue (previously the Collins Park Hotel) in Miami’s art deco district.
