Margaret Lockwood is the wicked Lady Skelton, stealing husbands, poisoning aged retainers and moonlighting as a highway robber in this classic full-blooded Gainsborough Pictures romp.
Scandalous in its time for the plunging necklines – scenes had to be reshot for the trembling innocents of the USA. Lady Skelton’s stately pile, ‘Maryiot Cells’, supposedly at ‘Maiden Worthy’ in ‘Buckinghamshire’, is Blickling Hall, northwest of Aylsham in Norfolk.
The redbrick Jacobean mansion is a National Trust property, and the house and garden are open to the public (check ahead for times).
