A real oddity. The incredible Lillian Gish, who started out on Birth of a Nation with DW Griffith, is paired with relative newcomer Bette Davis – who apparently proved just too much for her – in Lindsay Anderson’s gentle drama set on Cliff Island, off the coast of Portland, Maine.
The house is the Pitkin House, a private home on The Bluffs, on the south coast of the island. Cliff Island is small. It has no guesthouse or hotel – or bank. The Casco Bay Line ferry takes around an hour and a half to make the crossing from Portland.
