Forget everything you’ve seen before. This, claims the film’s publicity, is the way Vietnam really was. And from the team who brought such painstaking historical accuracy to Braveheart, who am I to doubt it?
The military base is the real Fort Benning, south of Columbus, western Georgia. The base has previously been seen in John Wayne’s 1968 The Green Berets and 1999 drama The General’s Daughter.
Director Randall Wallace found that the grounds of Fort Hunter Liggett Military Reservation, a training facility in Monterey, California, were a dead ringer for central Vietnam’s ‘Ia Drang Valley’. The base was also seen in Philip Noyce’s 1994 Clear and Present Danger.
