Sam Daniels (Dustin Hoffman) works to contain the lethal (and fictitious) Motaba virus, accidentally imported from Africa to West Coast USA.
The ‘Zaire’ scenes are the island of Kauai, Hawaii. The island often stands in for exotic jungle locations, in films such as the Jurassic Park films.
The infected town of ‘Cedar Creek’ is the charming Victorian village of Ferndale, about 20 miles south of Eureka, northern California.
The ‘hospital lab’ was a façade built onto the front of a Main Street store, the ‘State Theatre’ is Ferndale Repertory Theatre, 447 Main Street and the pet store is the Kemp Building, 513-525 Main Street.
In 2001, Ferndale also became the town of ‘Lawson’, where amnesiac writer Jim Carrey fetches up in Frank Darabont’s Hollywood blacklist drama, The Majestic.
The hospital is a combination of the main lobby of the Linda Vista Hospital, 610 South St Louis, Boyle Heights, Los Angeles – used for the hospital scenes in Pearl Harbor – and the Huntington Memorial Hospital, 100 Congress Street, Pasadena.
