An eye-catching title and an even more eye-catching poster image gave a huge boost to this black comedy about a small, out-of-the-way town where the inhabitants make a living from engineering road accidents and selling the spare parts.
It launched the career of Peter Weir, who went on to make The Truman Show, Dead Poets Society and Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World.
The ‘Paris’ of the title is not the French capital but a fictitious little Australian town. It’s actually Sofala, an old gold-rush town in the Turon River Valley, about 30 miles from Bathurst in the Western Plains, west of Sydney, New South Wales.
As an homage, the spiky little VW can be seen in the vehicle convoy of George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road.
