Caché | 2005

Echoes of David Lynch’s Lost Highway as Georges and Anne Laurent (Daniel Auteuil and Juliet Binoche) receive a series of unnerving videotapes showing that there house is under surveillance. The house in question is 49 Rue Brillat-Savarin, opposite rue des Iris, Cité Florale in southern Paris.

In a scene which will be horribly familiar to location hunters, Georges and Anne pause a further videotape in an attempt to read a fleetingly glimpsed street sign. This leads Georges to the apartment block of Majid (Maurice Bénichou) on Avenue Lénine at Rue Normandie-Niémen, in Romainville, northeast of Paris in Val-de-Marne.

Usually I’d dismiss ‘rue Pirandello’ as an obviously fictitious address, but this is Paris and it’s real. ‘Lycée Stephane Mallarmé’, the school attended by the couple’s son Pierrot, is École Nationale de Chimie Physique et Biologie de Paris, 11 Rue Pirandello.

The café where Anne is comforted by friend Pierre is Saveurs & Co, 38 rue de Bellechasse, off Boulevard Saint-Germaine, near the Solferino métro on the Left Bank.
