First of the major airliner-in-danger movies that spawned so many imitations throughout the 70s.
The fictitious ‘Lincoln International Airport’, where a frazzled Mel Bakersfield (Burt Lancaster) has to cope with blizzards, a suicide bomber and scene-stealing stowaway Ada Quonsett (Helen Hayes), is Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport (MSP) just to the south of Minneapolis where, rather than resorting to models, a real Boeing 707, rented at a cost of $18,000 a day, was actually landed in a snowstorm as, so it’s claimed, the film froze in the camera.
The interiors were filmed inside a grounded 707 installed at Universal Studios in Hollywood.
