This frantic pop-art farce became the first big international hit for Pedro Almodóvar, as several women with preposterously complicated lives criss-cross each other’s paths in a gloriously primary-coloured Madrid.
Although the penthouse apartment of Pepa (Carmen Maura), with her menagerie terrace, is clearly – and deliberately – a studio set, the ground floor is Calle de Montalban 7, 28014 Madrid, at Calle Alfonso XI alongside the western fringe of Parque del Retiro.
She takes the wonderful Mambo Taxi (I want one of these in London) about a mile north to the home of Ivan (Fernando Guillén), which is Calle Almagro 38, 28010 Madrid.
A couple of blocks east, the practice of feminist solicitor Paulina (Kiti Mánver), who turns out to be ‘the other woman’, is Paseo de la Castellana 31, 28046 Madrid.
The film climaxes at Adolfo SuŠrez Madrid-Barajas Airport, Avenida de la Hispanidad northeast of the city, where Pepa inventively makes use of a luggage trolley to foil Lucia’s (Julieta Serrano) attempt to kill Ivan.
