Traveller Viktor Navorski (Tom Hanks) is trapped within ‘JFK Airport’ by international bureaucracy when his Eastern European home country is no longer recognised by the UK.

The airport terminal is a vast and complex set built in disused hangar, Site 9, 2825 East Avenue P in Palmdale, California, 80 miles north of Los Angeles, where nearly 40 national chains volunteered to build replicas of their outlets, to take advantage of screen exposure in a Steven Spielberg movie.

The huge space was used again to stage the climactic sea battle for Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End.

The external shots of the airport are Montréal-Mirabel International Airport, 12300 Service A-4 Street, in Montreal, Quebec. The airport has cropped up again more recently as the home of hordes of the undead in zombie romance Warm Bodies.

Although Viktor hails from the fictitious ‘Krakhozia’, the story is based on Iranian Merhan Karimi Nasseri, who was similarly trapped in Terminal 1 of Charles De Gaulle Airport, Paris, from 1988 until being hospitalised in 2006.
