The real Edinburgh New Town is used to set the scene in the opening car ride, racing down St Vincent Street, glimpsing St Stephen’s Church before swinging left into North East Circus Place.
The flat shared by Alex, Juliet and David (Ewan McGregor, Kerry Fox and Christopher Eccleston) is 6 North East Circus Place on the corner of Royal Circus. The flat interior, though, was a set constructed in a warehouse in the Anniesland district of Glasgow.
Alex’s office is the newsroom of Glasgow’s Evening Times, while Juliet ’s hospital is the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Corsebar Road, in Paisley, west of Glasgow city centre. This also houses the mortuary where one of the trio finally ends up.
The flooded quarry where the car is disposed of is Mugdock Loch, in Mugdock Country Park, Mugdock Road, Craigallion Road, north of Milngavie (rail: Milngavie).
The charity bash, where David gets to assert his manhood, was in the Townhouse Hotel, 54 West George Street, Glasgow. In 2012, the hotel became Chaophraya, which lays claim to be the largest Thai restaurant in Europe.
The grave itself, in which dealer Hugo (Keith Allen) gets planted, is a wooded section of Rouken Glen Park, Rouken Glen Road, Thornliebank, a couple of miles southwest of Glasgow (rail: Thornliebank). The production team returned to Rouken Glen Park for the ‘Sean Connery’ scene in Trainspotting.
