A change from comedies for the Ealing Studios, with their first film in colour – a tragic historical romance. There was location filming at Blenheim Palace, the palatial home designed by Sir John Vanbrugh for the Duke of Marlborough, and the birthplace of his descendant, Sir Winston Churchill.

The house and its grounds have also been seen in the 1998 big-screen version of The Avengers, Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet, Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon and The Young Victoria.

Blenheim is open to the public, southwest of Woodstock village, on the A44, eight miles north of Oxford.
