Jean Renoir’s classic satirical comedy concerning relationships among aristocrats and their servants during a shooting weekend at a French chateau was believed destroyed in a bombing raid during WWII.
Although there was some damage to the film, the full version was eventually restored in 1961.
The country estate is the 17th century Château la Ferté-Saint-Aubin, in the Sologne, about 11 miles south of Orléans. The chateau, set in a vast park to the north of the town, is open to visitors, with antique toys and dolls, and from 2013 it promises – among other attractions – over 40 historical games (it’s rebranded as Le Chateau des Jeux) and cookery demonstrations.
