Picnic At Hanging Rock location: the girls disappear on a day out: Hanging Rock, Woodend, Victoria
Hanging Rock, the destination for the trip, is a striking rock formation near Woodend, on the A79 Calder Freeway about 50 miles northwest of Melbourne in Victoria. It’s a volcanic feature known as a mamelon (French for nipple), formed when a stiff type of lava is squeezed through a narrow vent in the earth and solidifies before it can flow away.
The nearby extinct 3,320-foot volcano, Mount Macedon, gives excellent views of the rocks.
