Author Stephen Chbosky adapts and directs the screen version of his popular coming-of-age novel set in the Pittsburgh suburbs.

Chbosky grew up in the comfortably affluent Upper St Clair neighbourhood, about ten miles southwest of Pittsburgh, which is where you can see the home of troubled Charlie (Logan Lerman) is 2392 Mill Grove Road, Upper St Clair (as ever, remember that this is a private home and please don’t disturb local residents).

Not far away, the restaurant where Charlie hangs out with step-siblings Patrick and Sam (Ezra Miller and Emma Watson) is the Upper St Clair branch of Kings Family Restaurants, at 155 McMurray Road.

‘Mill Grove High School’ is Peters Township High School, 264 East McMurray Road, in McMurray, a few miles further south.

Back towards Pittsburgh, the Hollywood Theater, 1449 Potomac Avenue, Dormont, is the cinema where Charlie participates in late night showings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, with Patrick and Sam (sadly, the Hollywood doesn’t actually host these evenings).

And in Pittsburgh itself, the tunnel through which Charlie, Sam and Patrick drive the pickup truck, to a soundtrack of David Bowie’s Heroes, is the Fort Pitt Tunnel. The tunnel carries I-376, the Penn-Lincoln Parkway, under Mount Washington to the double-deck Fort Pitt Bridge, crossing the Monongahela River to downtown Pittsburgh.
