Long-term unemployed worker Antonio Ricci (Lamberto Maggiorani) finally manages to get a bill-posting job, only to find his much-needed bike has been stolen.

Vittorio De Sica’s neo-realist classic, a staple of earnest film societies for decades, was shot on the streets of Rome. Ricci’s home is in the dismal government housing project of Citta Valmelaina on the Via Salaria in Rome's northern outskirts.

Riccii drops off his son at Porta Pingiana, and picks him up at night at the piazza at Porta Pia in the Montesacro district.

Together, they look for the stolen bicycle in the market at Piazza Vittoria, before glimpsing the thief at the market of Porta Portese, to the south of the Trastevere district.
