Angst Essen Seele Auf (Fear Eats The Soul) | 1974
Prejudice rears its ugly head when middle aged Emmi (Brigitte Mira) falls in love with younger Berber immigrant Ali (El Hedi Ben Salem) in Fassbinder’s loose reworking of Douglas Sirk’s All That Heaven Allows, which was made in Munich.
The ‘Asphalt Bar’, where Emmi first meets Ali, is now the very smart and popular pizza house, L’Angolo della Pizza, Breisacher Straße 30, in the Haidhausen district, east of the city centre.
Just north of the city centre is another Italian restaurant. Emmi and Ali awkwardly splash out on a celebration meal after their marriage in Osteria Italiana, Schellingstraße 62. The restaurant was a favourite of Adolf Hitler and it’s hard to believe the irony was not lost on Fassbinder.
