The third of George A Romero’s zombie trilogy finds the undead vastly outnumbering the living, who are holed up in an underground bunker and indulging in some nastiness of their own.

Most of the filming took place in a limestone mine at Wampum, 35 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, toward New Castle, in Pennsylvania.

The giant elevator to the underground compound was the Nike missile base outside Pittsburgh, though the entrance (the elevator platform) was built in a field on Sanibel Island, off the west coast of Florida, near Fort Myers.

Sanibel Island was also used for the beach from which the survivors manage to escape at the end of the movie. The city of the dead, rendered suitably decayed for the filming, is Fort Myers itself.
