Boudu Sauvé Des Eaux location: Boudu throws himself into the Seine: Pont des Arts, Paris

Boudu (Michel Simon) is the tramp rescued from a suicide bid who makes life hell for the family who take him in. Sound familiar? It was remade by Hollywood in 1985 as Down and Out in Beverly Hills.

The Jean Renoir original was filmed in Paris, and at Joinville, Marne. Studio filming was at the Eclair Studios, in Epinay.

Boudu makes his leap from the Pont des Arts, the wooden-planked pedestrian link between the Louvre on the Right Bank and the Institut de France on the Left.

The shop belonging to Édouard Lestingois (Charles Granval) , who saves him, is a real bookstore, and still in business. It’s Arenthon, 3 quai Malaquais on the Left Bank between the Pont des Arts and the Pont Neuf.

Boudu was lucky to have been saved, though. You can’t actually see the Pont des Arts from the shop’s windows.
