Trivia

Who could have dreamed that the director would go on to the mega-budget and mega-success of The Lord Of The Rings?

The road to the Rings started here, with Peter Jackson’s semi-pro exercise in gross-out schlock, made over four years on a budget of twopence in – of course – the director’s native New Zealand. The filming was around the capital, Wellington, at the southwestern tip of the North Island.

The house where aliens package up fat-free humans for intergalactic consumption is a protected colonial house, the Gear Homestead, Okowai Road, Papakowhai, Porirua City, in a picturesque harbour town about 20 minutes north of Wellington. Built in 1882 by the business magnate, James Gear, the Homestead is available to hire for weddings or special events.

Filmed also at Titahi Bay; Pukerua Bay; and Makara Beach, Wellington.
