Inevitably, there’s a touch of contrivance to get mobster Paul Vitti (Robert De Niro) back with psychiatrist Dr Sobel (Billy Crystal), in the form of a feigned mental crisis. Two and a half years after the events of Analyze This, Vitti is still serving his time in Sing Sing prison in Ossining, New York State. Although the gates of the real institution are seen when Vitti is released into the custody of Dr Sobel, the interior, where the breakdown has him singing highlights from West Side Story, is Riker’s Island (the prison barge previously seen in Carlito’s Way), in the East River north of Astoria, Queens.
Dr Sobel has apparently moved to a different house, though it’s still in Montclair, New Jersey, this time it’s on Wayside Place.
Vitti’s attempts to hold down a straight job are none to successful. The car showroom where sales patter gets his own personal spin – “Look at the size of that trunk... you could put three bodies in there” – Is Audi Forum NYC, on the southwest corner of Park Avenue at East 47th Street.
He fares no better as a waiter in the famous Gallagher’s Steak House, 228 West 52nd Street at Broadway in the Theatre District.
And he can’t resist fantasies of armed robbery in a diamond store on 47th Street in Manhattan’s diamond district (where Laurence Olivier understandably had a panic attack in Marathon Man).
The set for TV series Little Caesar, where Dr Sobel’s acting debut involves being dangled upside down from a roof, was the old Western Electric plant on the Passaic River. The Little Caesar set-up, though, where actor Anthony Bella (Anthony LaPaglia) asks for a few character pointers from Vitti, is on Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village.
‘Little Darlings’, the strip club, where Dr Sobel goes to find Vitti planning a big job, is now Terminal 5, 610 West 56th Street between 11th and 12th Avenues in the Clinton district. In reality, it’s a music venue. A block north, the bullion hijack takes place by what was the construction site on 12th Avenue between 57th and 58th Streets.
With everything finally sorted, Dr Sobel, Vitti and Jelly (Joe Viterelli) part company, with a chorus of Somewhere, on the riverside walk of Brooklyn Bridge Park, at the northern end of New Dock Street between the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge, Brooklyn.
